Factory blast kills 4 in Turkey; cause unknown (5:10 p.m.)
ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) - An explosion at a clothing factory in Istanbul killed four people and injured up to 40 others Thursday, local media reported.
The blast caused part of the five-story building in the Davutpasa district of Istanbul to collapse, and a fire broke out on the top floor, NTV television said. Firefighters and ambulance crews rushed to the scene. The cause of the blast was not immediately known.
NTV and CNN-Turk television said four people died, but did not cite a source.
Metin Arslan, an official in charge of emergency aid, told NTV that at least 15 people were injured and up to 10 people could be trapped inside the building. The Anatolia news agency said 40 people were injured and that the factory manufactured socks.
Television footage showed at least two men lying in the street. Another man with blood on his face walked nearby. Rubble lay strewn around the shattered factory building, and falling debris had smashed several vehicles. (AP) |
