Gunmen kill village chief, injure another
By Bong Garcia

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- A village chief died while another was wounded in a gun attack Thursday night along the busy street of Mayor Jaldon in downtown Zamboanga City, a police official said.

Senior Superintendent Manuel Barcena, Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) director, identified the slain village chief as Asmuarajah Musa of Barangay Gata-Gata, Panglima Estino town, Sulu.

Wounded was Hadji Jamal Dasat, 40, village chief of Kanula, Panamao town of the same province.

Barcena said the victims were returning to a local hotel, where they were billeted, when shot by one of two men riding tandem on a motorcycle.

Musa and Dasat have just bought a jacket and a pair of slippers from a nearby dry goods outlet when shot at by one of the suspects, added Barcena.

The two are in the city attending a three-day seminar for village chiefs in the provinces of Sulu and Tawi-Tawi conducted by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).

Barcena said they have the artist sketch of one of the suspects based on descriptions given to them by some witnesses.

He is inclined to believe that the motive of the incident could either be personal grudge or politics. (Sunnex)
