Guard slain in Talisay gas station heist

CEBU CITY -- A lone man robbed a gasoline station in Barangay Bulacao, Talisay City past 8 p.m., taking with him an estimated P50,000 cash.

Police, however, could not immediately confirm if the suspect had a companion who acted as lookout.

The suspect, armed with a gun, shot security guard Roger Sebastian from behind before proceeding to the cashier's booth of CHY Petron Station.

Sebastian, 47, was hit in the right thigh and left side of his body. He expired at 9:55 p.m., less than an hour after he was taken to the Talisay City District Hospital.

Sebastian, of Big JR Security Agency, started working at the gasoline station last November yet, reporting for work from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

A radio dyAB report said Sebastian was still seen crawling for safety before he was taken to the hospital.

After shooting Sebastian, the suspect then proceeded to the booth where cashier Nerissa Villaceran was staying and then took the money.

Villaceran, according to the radio report, reportedly kept on crying and refused to leave the booth.

The incident was captured on the station's surveillance camera.

The suspect was later seen running toward Sitio Hawod, also in Barangay Bulacao.

Residents, however, learned about the robbery, prompting them to try stopping the suspect from escaping, said PO3 Rico Emperwa.

But the suspect threw some of the money in the air to stop the crowd from chasing him, making police believe that the robber was not a "professional."

Because of this, Emperwa said they were able to recover most of the amount taken. (GC/LCR/RCT/Sun.Star Cebu)
