By Bong Garcia

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The police and military are conducting a joint investigation into the explosion that rocked the city of Iligan Sunday night injuring six people.

Major General Nehemias Pajarito, chief of the Army's 1st Infantry Division, has sent Explosive and Ordinance Demolition (EOD) personnel to Iligan City to assist the policemen in the conduct of their probe.

Pajarito on Monday disclosed that the explosion took place around 9 p.m. at Freedom Plaza in downtown Iligan City.

The explosion was so loud that the residents along corner Aguinaldo and Juan Luna Streets in Iligan City, panicked.

The incident occurred at the height of a singing contest being held in the plaza. The explosive that exploded was believed an improvised explosive device (IED).

Pajarito went to Iligan City to inspect the site of the explosion and get firsthand information about the incident.

He said the case is being handled by police with the assistance of Army EOD personnel. They are still trying to determine the type of explosive used and the identity of the suspect.

The victims, most of them teenagers, were rushed to two separate hospitals for treatment.

They are identified as Junior Pabustan, 15; Dennis Barot, 17; Lovely Rose Tecson, 15; Arnel Unutan, 17; Dexter Revelo, 19; and John Henry Natenga, 26.

Pabustan, Barot, Tecson, and Natenga were rushed to state-run Don Gregorio T. Lluch Memorial Hospital.

Unutan and Revelo, on the other hand, were treated at the Dr. Uy Hospital.

Of the six wounded, Natenga was the one who sustained serious injuries.

The incident took place eight days after the police foiled a bomb attack on a gasoline station in Pagadian City. (Sunnex/With Malu C. Manar of Sun.Star Davao)
