2 kids hurt in explosion By Bong Garcia
ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Two children aged three and nine were injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in the fishing village of Recodo, west of this city, a police official said.
Chief Inspector Hado Edding, chief of this city's police station 9, identified the victims as Suod Sayari, three, and Charlyn Sang-Ang, nine, both residents of Purok 9, Recodo.

The victims suffered minor injuries and were admitted at the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) for treatment, Edding said.
He said the victims were playing in front of the Sayari residence when suddenly an IED exploded in the area. The IED is believed to be used for blast fishing.
The police officer said investigations continue to determine the owner of the IED since it appears that the residents in the community are afraid to identify its owner.
"Somebody could have been fabricating IED for blast fishing and exploded prematurely," said Edding.
Aside from the two children, no other victims were reported.
Edding also said the Explosive and Ordnance Demolition (EOD) personnel of the Zamboanga City Police Office have retrieved explosive residues from the explosion site.
He said some of the fishermen still insist in using IED in blast fishing despite it being prohibited by the law. (Sunnex)For more Philippine news, visit Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro. (February 16, 2008 issue) Write letter to the editor. Click here. Join the Sun.Star message board. Click here. |
