Police, airport officials no show at Senate probe (12:20 p.m.)

MANILA - Police and airport officials linked to the abduction of Senate witness Rodolfo "Jun" Lozada failed to appear in the resumption of the Senate investigation into the botched multi-million-dollar national broadband network (NBN) project.

The officers claimed that the Senate investigation no longer serves its purpose of being an aid to legislation since it is already " in aid of prosecution."

The officers made the claim after Senator Jamby Madrigal filed charges of obstruction of justice against police and airport officials

The Verano law office sent a letter to the Senate stating the reason why their clients snubbed the hearing.

Verano law office represents Chief Superintendent Romeo Hilomen and Senior Superintendent Paul Mascariņas of the Police Security and Protection Office, Aviation Security Group Director Atilano Morada, ASG's reported civilian agent Rodolfo Valeroso, and Ninoy Aquino International Airport assistant general manager Angel Atutubo.

The senators conducted last week an ocular inspection at the NAIA. In the investigation they discovered from the airport's logbooks that showed a member of the Presidential Security Group also escorted Lozada upon arrival from Hong Kong last February 5.

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano said subpoenas will be issued against the said police and airport officials in the next hearing. (Sunnex)
