Guvs stage 'unity walk' to show support for Arroyo (5:59 p.m.)
MANILA -- At least 52 of the 81-member League of Provinces of the Philippines (LPP) pledged their continued support to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as calls for her to resign mount in light of the national broadband network (NBN) controversy.
The governors made a "unity walk" with Arroyo from the Palace grounds to the Heroes Hall to express their support, after attending a Cabinet meeting in Malacaņang, said they would support the President "all the way" as they believe that she deserves to finish her mandate until 2010.
The group said the economic performance of the country and its payback to their constituents like the different infrastructures, despite the allegations and controversies hounding the Arroyo government is proof that she is doing something right.
Misamis Occidental Governor and LPP president Leo Campos said their views are shared by their constituents as well as the other governors who attended the Cabinet meeting.
Bataan Governor Enrique Garcia and Ilocos Norte Governor Michael Keon said they are for the rule of law, rejecting any extra-constitutional or extra-legal means to remove Arroyo.
Antique Governor Salvacion Zaldivar-Perez said while some sectors mostly in Metro Manila are making a lot of noise for the President to step down, they too want to make "a lot of noise for the President."
Economic adviser and Albay Governor Joey Salceda said the governors reiterate their confidence on Arroyo believing that it is in the best interest of the country that she continues with her mandate and her programs.
The governors were in Malacaņang for a meeting with the Cabinet-National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) group where they discussed among others the issue of a forthcoming food summit, the mining operations in the countryside and the Kilos Asenso program. (JMR/Sunnex) |
