Police cite reports of possible coup plot by rebel soldiers (09:55 p.m.)

MANILA -- Philippine police said Tuesday they have received reliable intelligence reports of a possible public uprising being organized by junior military officers and other armed groups to overthrow President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's government.

Police cited the reports in seeking postponement of Wednesday's scheduled arraignment of an opposition senator, a former Scout Ranger commander and 16 other soldiers charged with rebellion for a takeover last year of a five-star hotel that was aimed at triggering an uprising against Arroyo.

Chief Inspector Joel Manuel Ana, in the court motion, said the accused men posed a "very serious threat" especially if they were to "come out in the open and be exposed to the media at this very critical point in time."

Makati Regional Trial Judge Elmo Alameda granted the request in the arraignment of detained Sen. Antonio Trillanes, a former navy officer, who also is facing charges of mutiny for a separate
rebellion in 2003.

The action comes amid mounting calls for Arroyo to resign as the Senate hears allegations of government corruption. (AP)
