2 suspects tagged for death of designer; 1 at large

CEBU CITY -- The Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) Thursday presented two of the three suspects who allegedly robbed and killed a landscape artist in Barangay Bakilid last week.

Suspects Wilbert Obaniel, 19, and Albert Angga, 24, pointed to a certain Bulagdo Otto as the one who tied the hands of Albert Deen and took his gun, cellular phone and cash.

Post here your Valentine's Day greetings

Otto is their neighbor in Barangay Lorega, Cebu City, they told the police.

MCPO Director Rodil Calungsud presented the two suspects to the media Thursday following their arrest in Barangay Balud in San Fernando town at 2 a.m. They are now preparing complaints of robbery with homicide against the two.

Obaniel and Angga admitted that the three of them were with Deen when the latter went home from a landscaping job at dawn last February 19. The victim lived on the top floor of the Franco building along M.C. Briones Street in Barangay Bakilid, Mandaue City.

They narrated to the police that an angry Deen came out of his room and started scolding them after finding out that his valuables were missing. But the two pointed to Otto as the one who took the things, prompting Deen to get his gun and confront the suspect.

Obaniel and Angga admitted that they helped Otto, who was armed with a knife that time, in subduing Deen.

Obaniel claimed that Otto initially tied a small piece of cloth to cover Deen's mouth but they failed to silence him, prompting Otto to get a bigger piece of cloth to cover both the victim's mouth and nose.

They parted ways with Otto after that, they claimed.

While conducting a follow-up investigation, Calungsud said they got a valuable tip from a Lapu-Lapu City policeman, SPO3 Roberto Pepito, who lives close to the suspects' house in Lorega.

Pepito told investigators that he had seen Deen visiting Obaniel and Angga in Lorega before the victim's decomposing body was discovered last February 22.

When Inspector Rainerio Cortes went to the suspects' houses, the two were out. One of Cortes' men, SPO1 Arnulfo Quiachon, talked to Angga's mother Maricar, and convinced her to reveal what her son had earlier confided to her.

She said her son did not expect the events last Feb. 19 to happen. She then volunteered to guide the police to San Fernando, where her son and Obaniel were staying.

They left Mandaue around midnight of Wednesday and reached the house of Rosemarie Aureo, Angga's mother-in law, last Thursday dawn.

At past 2 a.m., Angga and Obaniel arrived and saw the police official. Angga initially kept his identity from Cortes but when he saw his mother and SPO3 Pepito, he surrendered.

Police have started a manhunt for Otto, who was described as light-skinned, chinky-eyed and with an aquiline nose. (OCP of Sun.Star Cebu)
