Opposition backs constitutional succession (5:47 p.m.)
MANILA -- The United Opposition (UNO) said it did not fully support nor accept Vice President Noli de Castro as a successor to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo should she resign or be ousted from office amid the national broadband network (NBN)-ZTE deal controversy.
Opposition spokesman Adel Tamano said it is only the provision on succession of the 1987 Constitution that makes them agree to de Castro taking the post of presidency.
"I admit some people in the United Opposition do not like a Noli presidency since they believe he doesn't have what it takes to be a president, but since we respect the Constitution and the rule of law we agreed to accept the scenario of a de Castro presidency," he said.
He said constitutional succession would provide a peaceful and orderly transfer of power compared to a coup or even a revolution, a possibility he feels apprehensive about.
"We can’t do anything about it because whether we like it or not that is what the Constitution provides. We don’t have a choice. Either we respect the Constitution or there would be a coup or even a revolution,” he stressed. (AH/Sunnex) |
