Officers group confirms hiring of soldiers for destab plot (7:26 p.m.)

MANILA -- The National ROTC Alumni Association (Naraa) said there were really attempts to recruit its officers for a destabilization move against the Arroyo administration.

However, the association’s president, Armed Forces Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics Jerry Jalandoni, did not specifically name retired Navy commodore Ismael Aparri as the one who had approached them to turn against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Esperon has tagged Aparri, a leader of a military-based group that is critical of the government, as among the retired officers who have been attempting to recruit soldiers for the destabilization moves amidst the lingering political turmoil.

Jalandoni stressed that Naraa is committed to support the decision of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) leadership not to heed the call of various groups for the soldiers to take a side on the corruption charges, specifically on the issue of the controversial national broadband network (NBN) deal with China’s ZTE Corporation.

Instead of entertaining the recruitment by the retired officers, Jalandoni said Naraa officers will focus on carrying out its constitutional mandate and follow the chain of command, which is actually headed by President Arroyo she being the military’s Commander-in-Chief. (VR/Sunnex)
