Senate summons ZTE execs linked to corruption scandal (7:30 p.m.)

MANILA -- The Philippine Senate has summoned two executives of Chinese telecommunications giant ZTE Corp. to testify about a corruption scandal battering President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's administration, officials said Thursday.

The opposition-dominated Senate is investigating the government's broadband deal with ZTE, endorsed by Arroyo, that was allegedly tainted by bribery.

Arroyo, her husband and the country's elections chief - who has since quit - have denied allegations by former consultants in the deal that they benefited from huge kickbacks in the aborted deal to set up a nationwide broadband Internet network.

Senate President Manny Villar told reporters that ZTE executives Yu Yong and Fan Yang and five Filipinos, including the former elections chief, were served with subpoenas. (AP)
