Feltranz not joining transport holiday

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Federation of Land Transportation of Zamboanga (Feltanz) is not joining the nationwide transport holiday on Tuesday.

Feltranz president Edwin Mingala said he did not receive a call from their mother transport union encouraging them to join the transport holiday.

Mingala, whose group is affiliated with National Transport Union (NTU), said even if the NTU will ask them, "we will not join." He cited the lack of time to prepare for a transport strike.

The Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (Fejodap) and Integrated Metropolitan Bus Operators Association (IMBOA) have scheduled a nationwide transport holiday Tuesday to denounce the ticketing policies of local government units.

"Maybe, they did not call us because the transport holiday is not against the continuous oil price hike," Mingala said.

He disclosed that the continuous increase in prices of oil serves as the heaviest burden on the part of transport owners as well as the drivers.

"They (gasoline dealers) are rolling back the prices of gasoline by a few centavos but the increase they implement is much higher that what they rolled back," Mingala said.

Last week there was a price hike of P0.50 per liter.

He said the continuous increase in gasoline prices has a chain reaction, citing that spare parts prices have increased by as much as 50 percent.

Mingala called on the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to act on their request for a fare hike.

He said they have already submitted their request for a fare hike of P0.50 for the first four kilometer and an additional of P0.50 for every additional kilometer thereafter.

If granted, the minimum fare will increase to P7 from the present fare rate of P6.50 per passenger.

However, he said the LTFRB has not yet acted on their petition especially since gasoline dealers rolled back prices when the fare hike request was submitted. (Sunnex)
