Transports strike end up peacefully: police (5:38 p.m.)
MANILA -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) said the strike by various transport organizations in the National Capital Region (NCR) and in the nearby provinces of Cavite and Rizal ended before noon Tuesday with no untoward incident reported.
PNP spokesman Nicanor Bartolome said the transport strike ended shortly after the issuance of Executive Order (EO) 172 which seeks to review all the traffic regulations being questioned by the striking drivers and operators.
Bartolome said at least 80 percent of the transportation was paralyzed due to the strike. Thousands of commuters have been stranded in the streets due to fewer passenger vehicles that continued their trips.
The PNP and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) deployed scores of vehicles to various parts of Metro Manila to mitigate the effects of the transport strike.
Bartolome said with the peaceful ending of the transport strike, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) is now about to downgrade its full alert status, which was declared last Monday for any eventuality during the strike.
PNP Chief Avelino Razon Jr. ordered all PNP units involved in motorists and commuters assistance operations to remain in their posts until the end of the day.
Although transport groups have called-off their self-declared "transport holiday" early Tuesday, the PNP will continue to assist stranded motorists along major streets and thoroughfares until after the situation has normalized. (VR/Sunnex) |
