KIDAPAWAN CITY -- Authorities in Cotabato City arrested on Wednesday a suspected bomber identified as Zaldy Abdul Ibrahim, believed to be member of the dreaded Al Khobar extortion group operating in southwest Mindanao.

Confiscated from Ibrahim was an improvised explosive device (IED) placed in a pack bag.

Lieutenant Colonel Julieto Ando, spokesman of the Army's 6th Infantry Division based in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Shariff Kabunsuan, said the suspect planned to place the explosive in one of the thickly-populated areas in Cotabato City.

"It could have inflicted damage to people and properties if we did not intercept the plan," said Ando.

Ibrahim was caught carrying the explosive while on board a passenger vehicle along the highway in Datu Odin Sinsuat town in Shariff Kabunsuan.

Lieutenant Colonel Hermie Aquino of the Army's 6th Infantry Battalion led the arrest.

According to Ando, the soldiers learned of the plan of the suspect to bring in an IED to Cotabato City through information relayed by confidential informants, apparently civilians.

Ando said soldiers recovered from Ibrahim's possession a homemade bomb fashioned from a live 60 MM mortar projectile rigged with a battery-operated blasting mechanism attached to a mobile phone.

The explosive, reports said, is identical to those used in recent bombings in different areas in southwest Mindanao. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
