3 dies, 19 hurt in grenade explosion (1:16 p.m.)

MANILA -- A government militiaman and two other partygoers died and at least 19 others were injured when a grenade in the possession of the trooper exploded in Sulop town in Davao del Sur late Friday night, police reported on Saturday.

Initial investigation identified the militiaman as Reto Pelonio, while the two other fatalities were Servillano Brigoli and Junreal Brigoli both of Sulop town.

Reports said the explosion occurred at 10 p.m. Friday during a dance program at New Sulop village.

Authorities said the grenade carried by Pelonio might have exploded in his pockets because there was no crate found in the area.

Quoting witnesses, Pelonio was said to be drunk at the time of the incident. (VR/Sunnex)
