Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway opens for Holy Week (01:02 p.m.)

MANILA -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered a one-week trial opening of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway for light vehicles starting Tuesday in anticipation of the observance of the Holy Week, Deputy presidential spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo said.

Fajardo said the trial period would be from March 18 to 24 and would be opened to Class one or small vehicles only.

She said toll fees would also be waived during this period.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said the Subic-Clark Expressway is a very important infrastructure project of the administration which would be an impetus to further development in the North.

The Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway is a 93.77 kilometer, four-lane expressway that runs from the Subic Bay Freeport Zone in Zambales to the Central Techno Park in Tarlac City, Tarlac. It runs through the interchange with North Luzon Expressway (Nlex) near the Clark Special Economic Zone in Angeles City, Pampanga.

The road is intended to provide an alternative route and shorter travel time leading to the two economic zones.

The P27.40 billion project started in April 2005 and was completed this month. It would be formally opened in April. (JMR/Sunnex)
