Rebels burn Globe tower in Compostela Valley

DAVAO CITY -- Suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) torched a cell site tower of Globe Telecommunications on Monday morning in Compostela Valley.

According to Chief Superintendent Andres Caro, regional police director, the rebels attacked and burned the Globe cell site at around 5 a.m.

"At least seven armed rebels attacked the cell site of Globe," Caro said in an interview Monday morning.

A report obtained by Sun.Star Davao revealed that the tower is located at Purok 5, Barangay Linoan, Montevista, Compostela Valley.

No one was injured during the burning.

National Telecommunications Commission (NTC)-Southern Mindanao Director Josue de Villa-Go said in a separate interview that the issue might be due to non-payment of revolutionary taxes.

"Globe is known not to give in to their demands and whims," Go said. "Not even to give them cell phone units as gifts."

The NTC-Southern Mindanao director further said that for every damaged cell site, cell phone service within at least a 15-kilometer radius is affected. (CPM/Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
