Labor office sends funds for stranded OFWs in Saudi (6:06 p.m.)

MANILA -- The Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) said funds had been sent to the Philippine Embassy in Saudi Arabia to finance the immediate repatriation of the nearly 200 stranded overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) there.

Acting Labor Secretary Marianito Roque said they already sent the money two weeks ago and they are expecting the repatriation to start next month.

Roque admitted that the cause of the delays is getting the exit clearance from the immigration of Saudi Arabia since the authorities there wanted to make sure that before they give OFWs the exit clearance, they should have no pending case.

"Ticket is the least problem, the biggest problem is getting them cleared in Saudi Arabia, they are checking for the pending cases," explained Roque.

Records of the embassy showed that there are about 178 OFWs that have been stranded and staying at the consular of office of the Philippines in Saudi Arabia. (MSN/FP/Sunnex)
