Mutineer suffers from dengue (5:53 p.m.)
MANILA -- A lawyer of one of the detained leader of the Magdalo group that staged the 2003 Oakwood mutiny and last year's Manila Peninsula Hotel standoff said his client is suffering from dengue and was confined last week at the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital in Camp Crame.
Reynaldo Robles said he would request Makati Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 148 Judge Oscar Pimentel and Branch 150 Judge Elmo Alameda to allow Marine Captain Gary Alejano to be brought to a hospital outside of Camp Crame to ascertain his medical condition.
"We will ask the court that my client's health condition be checked in other hospitals," he said, adding that they might file the motion within the day.
Alejano along with 29 other junior officers and opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV is facing coup d'etat charges for the Oakwood mutiny before the sala of Pimentel while rebellion charges were filed against him and 18 others including Trillanes for staging the Manila Pen caper in November last year.
They were since detained at the PNP Custodial Center in Camp Crame while the trial of their cases was being heard by the courts.
He said his client was brought to the police hospital Tuesday last week but added they were concerned about his condition since doctors there were not able to fully diagnose what is his illness.
Robles said Alejano has submitted a blood sample to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Medical Center in V. Luna, Quezon City and it was confirmed that the officer has contracted a dengue although they could not say for sure where he contracted the disease. (AH/Sunnex)
