SC to release 2007 bar exam results Saturday
MANILA -- The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday announced that the results of the 2007 bar examinations participated in by about 5,626 law graduates from different law schools nationwide will be released on Saturday.
Initially, results were set to be released Friday, but the SC decided to postpone it to Saturday.

SC spokesman Jose Midas Marquez said the decision to reschedule the release of bar results was reached following an en banc session to give the Office of the Bar Confidant (OBC) ample time to decode the numbers assigned to each examinee.
"The OBC said the decoding will take longer than expected, that is why they have decided to postpone it for Saturday, but they are now (Friday) starting to decode," he said.
Marquez pointed out that every year, the court receives requests for re-checking, especially from those who failed to pass the examinations.
"But the court does not normally entertain or allow such requests unless there are strong arguments for re-checking," he said.
Marquez said they expect the decoding to be finished by lunchtime Friday.
He also said the list of names of bar passers will be displayed in LCD projectors to be strategically displayed at the front yard of the SC near the Faura entrance on Saturday.
The results can likewise be viewed by accessing the SC website at www.supremecourt.gov.ph.
Associate Justice Adolfo Azcuna, chairman of the 2007 committee on bar examinations, will hold a press briefing prior to the actual release of the bar results.
Sources said some of the bar takers last year were children of some government officials, among them SC Associate Justice Presbiterio Velasco Jr.; Court of Appeals (CA) Justices Remedios Salazar-Fernando, Lucenito Tagle and Mariflor Castillo; Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez; and Chief State Prosecutor Jovencito Zuño.
OBC records showed that a total of 5,626 law graduates from 109 law schools nationwide took the examinations held on the first four Sundays of September 2007 at the De La Salle University in Taft Avenue, Manila.
This number is comparatively lower than the 6,187 examinees who participated in the 2006 bar exams.
Court insiders, however, said only a small percentage out of the 5,626 law students will make the cut due to the extreme difficulty of the exams.
The source added that the SC committee is mulling to adjust the passing rate so that more examinees could make the exam.
The 2007 Bar Examination marks the third time that the "five-strike" rule was implemented.
This rule limits to five the maximum number of times a candidate may take what is reputed to be the most grueling government-administered test.
The five-strike rule is pursuant to the Court's resolution in Bar Matter 1161,
Re: Proposed Reforms in the bar examinations, which provides, among others, that those who have taken the bar exams five or more times -- and still failed -- shall no longer be eligible to take any future Bar Exams.
Bar Matter 1161 provides for the "disqualification of a candidate after failing in three examinations, provided, that he may take a fourth and fifth examination if he successfully completes a one-year refresher course for each examination; provided, further that upon the effectivity of this resolution, those who have already failed in five or more bar examinations shall be allowed to take only one more bar examination after completing a one-year refresher course."
The court conducts the bar examinations pursuant to Article 8, Section 5 of the Constitution, which provides that "it shall have the power to promulgate rules governing the admission to the practice of law."
The Rules of Court provide that "a candidate may be deemed to have passed his examination successfully if he has obtained a general average of 75 percent in all subjects without falling below 50 percent in any subject."
