MANILA -- Close to 7,000 people have acquired dengue and more than 50 Filipinos have died of the illness, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

Records of the National Epidemiology Center (NEC), an attached agency of the DOH, indicated that as of March 8, 2008 dengue cases was placed at 6,653 or an increase of 22 percent from the 5,453 cases posted in 2007 during the same period.

Deaths recorded in 2008 are also higher with 67 from the 49 deaths recorded last year.

The DOH said the cases and deaths recorded are still lower and within the manageable level as compared to the past years.
