Arrested 'al-Qaeda' man, a swindler
DAVAO CITY -- The man claiming to be a member of international terrorist group Al-Qaeda turned out to be a swindler and an extortionist.
Police Regional Office (PRO)-Southern Mindanao director Andres Caro said they have already filed several counts of grave threat charges against Romie John C. Rosalia alias "Jumah Malahd/Mammud Abbas."

Authorities arrested Rosalia at Quagmire Internet Cafe along 106 Bonifacio Street, Davao City on March 23.
Caro said the suspect was in the act of sending e-mails using his registered e-mail address to extort and demand $1.5 million or P60 million. The said e-mails were addressed to multi-national companies, shipping firms, prominent hotel chains, and commercial banks in Mindanao.
A Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) account (0366217444/0366-217444) is provided in the e-mailed extortion letter where the would-be victims will deposit the amount demanded, otherwise, their respective installations would be subjected to terrorist attacks.
Caro said they have been monitoring the suspect for one month after alarmed recipients of the terrorist threats like Marco Polo Hotel-Davao, Mandaya Hotel-Davao, Green Bank of Caraga Province, Metrobank, and Philippine Savings Bank reported the incident to the authorities.
Caro said the "cyber extortion" incident reached him and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte readily ordered all police units and Task Force Davao to immediately trace and arrest the suspect.
The Regional Special Operations Group (RSOG) in Southern Mindanao, Regional Intelligence and Investigation (Riid), Davao City Police Office, Army's regional defense Unit (RCDU), and Task Force Davao conducted a manhunt operation, resulting to Rosalia's arrest.
With the evidence seized, Rosalia was immediately turned over to the Investigation and Detective Management section of Davao City Police Office. (BOT/Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
