Military sends trucks for rice distribution in metro

MANILA -- Major General Fernando Mesa, commander of the military's National Capital Region Command (NCRcom), has ordered the implementation of the augmentation of military vehicles and security personnel in the distribution of rice within Metro Manila.

The distribution of rice from the National Food Authority (NFA) and coordination with NFA officials was in accordance with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's directive, said Mesa. The rice is sold for a cheap price.

"An initial batch of 20 military vehicles composed of M35 trucks and 11/2 ton troop carrier trucks have been augmented to NFA, NCR office at their NFA Compound along Visayas Avenue in Quezon City," the NCRcom chief said.

"NCRcom would also provide security aside from assisting in the transport of NFA rice to distribution areas in highly populated and depressed areas within NCR," he added.

Mesa said NCRcom personnel are pleased and delighted that they will be able to assist in providing Metro Manila consumers a chance to buy a good quality but affordable rice. More military vehicles would be provided by NCRcom within the week.

The distribution areas for said vehicles for Friday include Gagalangin, Capulong and Smokey Mountain in Tondo, Manila; and Barangays Payatas, Commonwealth and Vasra in Quezon City.

Additional distribution areas are District VI and Sta. Mesa in Manila; Barangays Sta. Lucia and Silangan in Quezon City; and NFA-UN Avenue, Paco and Happyland Road in Manila. (Sunnex)
