Muslim militants kidnap 4 fuel black marketeers (6:30 p.m.)
JOLO -- Suspected militants from the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf group have kidnapped four men allegedly involved in selling black-market fuel in the southern Philippines, police said Wednesday.
Provincial police Chief Julasirim Kasim said gunmen stopped a vehicle carrying the men and containers of contraband diesel fuel in a village outside Maimbung town on Jolo island on Monday.
The kidnapping was apparently prompted by the alleged black marketeers' unpaid debt, he said, without providing details.
The same group of rebels kidnapped a local teacher last week but released him unharmed hours later, Kasim said. It was unclear whether a ransom was paid. (AP) |
