MMDA urged to remove agency chief’s posters in metro (10:14 a.m.)

MANILA -- Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay asked the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to immediately remove the posters of agency chairman Bayani Fernando in the city.

Binay said the MMDA should remove the posters in the soonest time possible adding that he will personally remove the posters, which many considers as a political campaign material, if the agency refuse to do so.

"The MMDA should remove these posters if only to show that they are indeed serious in their campaign against the proliferation of illegal posters, billboards and ads in Metro Manila," Binay said adding that one week is more than enough for the agency to remove the posters.

He said the posters are evidence of Fernando's hypocrisy considering that the MMDA has taken the forefront in the campaign to remove illegal posters.

The tarpaulin shows an unsmiling barong-clad Fernando with his arms across his chest. The poster bears the message "Kaayusan: Metro Guwapo, Tao Ganado, Produktibo, Kahirapan Naiibisan."

The posters could be seen on the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and MMDA information posts along Edsa and other thoroughfares.

Binay said Fernando should explain to the Metro Manila Council (MMC), the policy-making body of the MMDA, the propriety of the posters adding that the agency cannot deny that the amount spend for printing came from the government.

Last Wednesday, authorities caught three persons vandalizing posters of Fernando in Mandaluyong City before dawn.

The three reportedly smeared what appeared to be black ink over a poster of Fernando with a message that read "Kaayusan, Pagbabago sa Kapaligiran, Pagbabago sa Kaisipan."

The suspects scrawled "KDMY…Berdugo (Executioner)" over the poster message. The incident took place near the Starmall in Mandaluyong City.

But the MMDA defended the posters and said they are prepared for any investigation into the matter. (AH/Sunnex)
