Most of Manila without power after falling crane cuts cable (12:33 p.m.)

MANILA -- A construction crane fell and damaged an electricity transmission line, cutting off power to most of Manila early Friday, officials said.

The outage grounded trains and disrupted traffic, leaving commuters stranded throughout Manila, radio reports said.

A spokesman for the state-run National Transmission Co., Arvee Villafuerte, said about 70 percent of metropolitan Manila was without power shortly after 9 a.m. (0100 GMT). He said he expected the power supply to be restored soon.

Villafuerte told ABS-CBN television the outage was caused by a crane that cut a cable in a Manila suburb, triggering an automatic shutdown in several power plants. (AP)
