1 rebel killed in Samar clash (3:03 p.m.)
MANILA -- A communist New People's Army (NPA) rebel was killed following a firefight with government troops in Basey town in Western Samar, the military reported Saturday.
Quoting reports from the field, Army spokesman Ernesto Torres said the firefight initiated by the 62nd Infantry Battalion (IB) occurred last Wednesday.
Torres said the soldiers from the Army unit were on combat operations at Cancaiyas village when they caught up with undetermined number of rebels, resulting in the brief clash.
"Firefight lasted for 20 minutes, after which the NPA rebels scampered toward different direction," said Torres adding that the troops also recovered from the scene of the firefight a home-made shotgun.
Meanwhile, Torres reported the recovery of various war materials by Scout Platoon of 76th IB under 2nd Lieutenant Cupay at Sitio Villa Minda, Sto Niņo, Ilaya town in Quezon also last Wednesday.
Torres said enemy subversive documents and materials are being kept at the said place.
The troops recovered 11 CDs; 24 pieces of cassette tapes; one ICOM-IC-V68 FM Transceiver radio (w/out battery pack); one AVR; two cell phone chargers; one extension socket; two adaptors and subversive documents with high Intel value.
"Said items belong to Komiteng Probinsya Quezon when they encamped at said place last May 2005 and were left by alias Jocay to a certain Alex de Luis for safekeeping," said Torres. (VR/Sunnex)
