Group fears increase of crime rate due to poverty (1:54 p.m.)
DUMAGUETE CITY -- The Consumers' Welfare group in Dumaguete City has expressed apprehensions for the possible increase of the crime rate due to poverty today.
Lawyer Gary Guido Tabios, president of the Consumers' Welfare group, told Sun.Star that the worst effect of the high rocketing of prices of the basic needs might increase the crime rate in the city.
Tabios said the lower class of the community is the most affected with the continued increase of rice prices and other basic needs.
He, however, hopes that businessmen will not take advantage of the situation.
But the worst, said Tabios, is that some people might be tempted to do evil things just to survive.
Fernando Martinez, who chaired the city and provincial anti-drug abuse council, stressed that not only crimes against person may increase but also drug addiction.
He explained that even drug users may push illegal drugs not just for personal needs but for the survival of the family. (Victor L. Camion/Sunnex)
