Food riot won't happen in RP: priest

MANILA -- A church official said the uprising of people in other countries due to the food crisis will not happen in the Philippines.

Father Anton Pascual, executive director of Caritas Manila, said: "I know that there is a food shortage in the world but I don't think the chaos which is happening in other states is unlikely to occur in our country."

He noted that being a peace loving and fun loving people, Filipinos would not engage in violence just to get food as they will surely resort to other peaceful ways to find substitute to the staple commodity.

He said Filipinos could easily adapt to a particular situation or a problem, which is another factor that the public would be able to beat this problem.

Likewise, Pascual said the faith in the Lord of every Filipino is also a major factor why they able to succeed whatever dilemma they are in.

At the same time, Pascual urged the government to apprehend all rice hoarders, prosecute them and let the poor people have access on rice.

Meanwhile, an official of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) asked the public to remain peaceful and calm on the escalating price of basic commodities.

Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez, public affairs officer of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), said resorting to violence is not the best and brightest way in facing problems.

"Let us remain open-minded and assess the situation very wisely," he said. (Sunnex)
