Palace: Trillanes should learn from fellow convicted soldiers (11:24 a.m.)

MANILA -- Malacaņang Tuesday said detained Senator Antonio Trillanes IV should learn from the example of his former comrades in the Magdalo and have his own change of heart.

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo said the nine convicted Magdalo soldiers should be given credit for realizing their "grave mistake" when they launched the Oakwood mutiny in July 2003.

"Maybe Senator Trillanes can study the actions of his former comrades and learn from their humble admission leading to their change of heart," Fajardo said.

She added that there is no ploy behind the recommendation of the defense department and the Armed Forces for a presidential pardon for the Magdalo soldiers.

She said the conviction of the soldiers is a "manifestation of the triumph of the justice system."

"The soldiers, having been given their day in court, changed their plea from not guilty to guilty. There is no ploy," she said.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said President Arroyo's decision on the recommendation would be in line with the Constitution and would adhere to the chain of command and respect for the rule of law. (JMR/Sunnex)
