Zamboanga: Bombings raise people's security awareness (6:03 p.m.)

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The recent bombings in Zamboanga City have raised the awareness and concerns of the people so they are more likely to help police and military authorities guard the city against further attacks, a police official noted.

On Wednesday evening, police and military explosive ordnance demolition (EOD) personnel "disrupted" a suspicious baggage left unattended at the premises of a school just a stone's throw away from City Hall following a tip from concerned residents.

The disruption procedure was done shortly after 7 p.m. at the Universidad de Zamboanga (UZ), which is just across City Hall in downtown Zamboanga, after the area was cleared of pedestrians.

Superintendent Jose Bayani Gucela, Police Regional Office (PRO) 9 EOD chief, on Thursday disclosed the baggage turned out to be garbage possibly left by one of the stall occupants at the ground floor of the UZ edifice. (Bong Garcia/Sunnex)
