Barbieto to undergo court martial for graft (5:25 p.m.)
MANILA -- Philippine Army investigators have recommended the conduct of court martial proceedings against Major General Jose Barbieto, former commander of the Army's 4th Infantry Division (ID), and one of his men on charges of corruption, a military spokesman said.
"The Philippine Army has completed its pre-trial investigation on Major General Jose Barbieto on allegations of personnel and resource mismanagement," said Army spokesman Ernesto Torres in announcing the development.
Torres said Army investigators found prima facie evidence to proceed with the trial of Barbieto and Staff Sergeant Roseller Echipare. The two allegedly asked P25,000 from people in exchange for enlistment in the Army and for mismanagement of militia funds.
The two are confined and restricted to the Army headquarters at Fort Bonifacio in Makati City and placed under the custody of Brigadier General Ricardo Morales, commander of the Army headquarters and Headquarters Support Group. (VR/Sunnex) |
