Arroyo settles on gov't-to-gov't deal vs rice bidding (2:27 p.m.)

MANILA -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Tuesday decided to go for government-to-government deal instead of rice bidding, saying that it is meant to keep rice prices from increasing.

Arroyo added that the other ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) are also cautious about tendering.

She announced this during a visit to Camarines Sur, following the failed bidding for the procurement of 675,000 metric tons of rice.

National Food Authority (NFA) deputy administrator Ludivico Jarina said a call for an auction may be possible in the third or fourth quarter of the year but not in the near future.

Jarina also said they have already procured 1.713 million metric tons and that this is enough "to tide over the lean months."

The NFA declared a failure on Monday their rice bidding when only Vietnam Southern Food Corporation submitted a bid. (Sunnex)
