Fighting erupts in Sulu town

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Fighting ensued between two feuding families in one of the 19 towns of the island province of Sulu, a police official disclosed Monday.

One group of protagonists in the feud is known politically.

Chief Superintendent Joel Goltiao, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) police director, identified the feuding groups as those allied with Luuk town Mayor Allayon Arbison and those belonging to the Salip Amiril family.

Initial report reaching Goltiao's office disclosed that the firefight started around 4:30 a.m. Monday in the town of Luuk, 52 kilometers east of Jolo, the province's capital.

Goltiao disclosed that prior to the fighting, the Amiril family allegedly abducted the granddaughter of the Arbison patriarch for marriage.

Patriarch Abdurahman Arbison is the former mayor and the father of incumbent Luuk town Mayor Allayon and Sulu second district Representative Munir Arbison.

The kidnapped Arbison girl, who was not immediately identified, managed to escape and inform her family about the incident.

Arbison allegedly ordered the Amiril family to leave town but the Amirils reportedly sought help from their equally powerful family and they decided to retaliate against the town mayor's group.

Reports reaching the Armm police disclosed that the fighting started when the Amirils attacked the house of the incumbent Luuk town mayor.

Goltiao said there was no report of casualties but there was displacement of civilians in the area.

Goltiao ordered his personnel in the province to initiate measures to put an end to the feud.

He described the situation in the town of Luuk as still very tense. (BPG/Sunnex)
