'MILF commander' nabbed in Cavite (1:20 p.m.)

MANILA -- Operatives of the Manila Police District (MPD) arrested on Wednesday morning an alleged commander of the secessionist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in Bacoor town in Cavite, sketchy police reports revealed.

The suspect, identified as Basat Malacao, was arrested by operatives of MPD's Special Weapons and Tactics Team by virtue of a warrant for a pending murder charge.

Reports said Malacao's address is in Manila but authorities said that through a tip provided by informants they were able to trace the suspect's whereabouts in Cavite. The policemen seized a cache of explosives from the suspect's possession.

It was not immediately clear if Malacao is indeed a member of the MILF, which is negotiating for a peace accord with the government. Talks between the MILF and the government hit the snag last year on the substantive issue of ancestral domain. (VR/Sunnex)
