MANILA (Updated 1:32 p.m.) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo granted pardon to the nine convicted Magdalo soldiers during the turnover ceremonies at Camp Aguinaldo on Monday.

Arroyo said as commander-in-chief of the military, she consents to the recommendation of retiring Armed Forces chief Hermogenes Esperon to pardon the nine mutineers.

Two of the nine convicted mutineers were sentenced to life imprisonment. They were Army captains Milo Maestrecampo and Gerardo Gambala.

The seven other junior officers meanwhile were penalized with a 12-year jail terms.

All convicted mutineers were restricted from rejoining military service.

Army Captain Gerardo Gambala appealed on April 11, on behalf of his fellow convicted soldiers, for presidential pardon.

The mutineers have expressed remorse for their adventurism. They apologized to the President and the nation for their actions and the resulting damage to the economy. (Sunnex)
