2 soldiers hurt in Cateel clash

DAVAO CITY -- Two Army soldiers were wounded in an encounter with rebels in Cateel, Davao Oriental while four other rebels attempted to burn a communication tower in Montevista, Compostela Valley Friday.

Colonel Allan Luga of the Army's 1001st Brigade said soldiers from the Bravo Company of the 67th Infantry Battalion and the Special Action Force of the Philippine National Police (PNP) were conducting patrol around 11:30 p.m. in Sitio Upper Hulid in Cateel town when they encountered about 20 fully armed rebels.

The team leader Lieutenant Gabawa was wounded in the clash, along with Corporal Daanoy. They were immediately airlifted to a hospital in this city after the incident.

Gabawa and Daanoy as of Saturday are said to be in stable condition.

In a related development, the group of rebels, which attempted to raze a communication tower of Globe Telecoms in the town of Montevista, Compostela Valley, were said to be members of the New People's Army (NPA).

According to Luga, the incident happened around 7 p.m. Friday in Purok 2 Poblacion.

The rebels took the .38 caliber revolver of the lone guard Glen Condiman before attempting to burn the equipment inside the tower, said Luga.

Luga, however, disclosed that the NPA rebels failed to burn down the tower when reinforcement from the Army's 28th IB arrived in the scene.

The military group who responded to the area came onboard two armored vehicles.

The guard readily put out the fire after the rebels withdrew.

Luga added that the tower did not incur heavy damage, and the armored vehicles will temporarily be stationed in the said tower until Sunday.

According to reports, this is the second telecommunication tower attacked by NPA rebels in Montevista, Compostela Valley. Globe Telecom's refusal to pay revolutionary taxes to the rebel group is said to be the reason behind the attack. (BOT/Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
