20 Dagupan jail officers sacked

DAGUPAN CITY -- Twenty officers of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) district jail were relieved from their posts following the escape of two inmates on May 17.

BJMP regional information officer Ricardo Fonseca said among those relieved was jail warden Florante Nisperos.

Jail Superintendent Edgar Bolcio replaced Nisperos.

The sacked BJMP personnel were reassigned to the national headquarters, said Fonseca.

The two inmates detained at BJMP district jail were able to escape when a riot among the inmates erupted inside the jail while typhoon Cosme, which killed more than 50 persons and displaced thousands of families in Northern Luzon, whipped the city.

The two escapees, identified as Norberto Tamayo of Barangay San Miguel, Calasiao and Jeffrey Soriano of Barangay Tebag, Mangaldan, took advantage of the riot.

Tamayo was committed at the BJMP for illegal drugs while Soriano faced theft charges.

The 15 inmates involved in the riot have already been transferred to the BJMP district jail in San Carlos City, according to Fonseca.

The jail riot happened around 9 p.m. of May 17 while the city was battered by typhoon Cosme. The Dagupan City police received a phone call that night from Jail Warden Asein Tacdoy asking for a back up, as the unrest was ongoing inside the jail.

About 10 jail personnel were on duty that night, but despite their presence a massive jailbreak could have possibly happened had the policemen did not arrive.

One of the police officers, in an earlier interview, said the inmates had already made three holes at the prison walls, and one was wide enough to accommodate two people at a time.

According to reports, the inmates escaped due to maltreatment inside the jail.

As of Wednesday, Fonseca said a manhunt operation is still ongoing to recapture the two escapees. (LCMY/Sunnex)
