Arroyo orders probe on Subic shabu shipment (12 p.m.)

PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered a thorough investigation and immediate filing of charges against those responsible for the bringing in of some P5 billion worth of high-grade shabu in the country trough the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said Malacaņang was "surprised" when Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group head Antonio Bello reported to them about the intercepted 710 kilos of to shabu.

Ermita said the President ordered authorities to get to the bottom of the incident and to file appropriate charges against those behind the illegal shipment.

He said Arroyo does not want the image of Subic tarnished by the incident as the country steps up the development and invitation for both local and foreign firms to invest in the area.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said the capture of the shipment proves that the government is serious in its campaign against drugs and smuggling. (JMR/Sunnex)
