Rudy Fernandez dies at 56 (12:45 p.m.)
MANILA -- After months of battling periampullary cancer, multi-awarded actor Rudy Fernandez passed away at his Quezon City home Saturday morning.
Quoted from the text message forwarded to Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP) the camp of the actor said, "Our beloved Rudy Fernandez has gone home to his Maker at 6:15 this morning, June 7, 2008."
Last week, Daboy, as his friends and fans called him, was discharged from the hospital. He was brought home.
Fernandez was diagnosed with cancer last 2006 and was subjected to several treatments in Japan, US and here in the Philippines for several months.
Last May 10, a healing mass at Christ the King Church in Quezon City, was offered for the actor's speedy recovery.
It was attended by his friends in showbiz and supporters
Fernandez's remains were at the Heritage Memorial Park in Taguig City. Details for his interment will be announced.
Earlier this month, Daboy was awared by the The Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) the 2008 Ulirang Artista Lifetime Achievement Award, at the 24th Star Awards for Movies. He was also bestowed an FPJ Lifetime Achievement Award by the the Film Academy of the Philippines.
Fernandez is the son of legendary film director Gregorio Fernandez.
Daboy first appeared in the film directed by his father titled “Luksang Tagumpay” in 1956. He was only three-years-old. In 1960, he appeared in his father's film “Emily”.
He also starred in “For Your Mama”, “Sweet Matutina”, “Bitayin si Baby Ama”, “Lagalag: The Eddie Fernandez Story,” and “ Ang Leon, Ang Tigre at ang Alamid”.
One of his breakthrough films was“Markang Bungo” which is a film based on a true story. He portrayed the well-known Baguio City police officer Bobby Ortega. The said film is famous for Daboy's Tagalog line, "Trabaho lang ito, walang personalan."
Fernandez won two FAMAS Best Actor awards for the action films “Batuigas...Pasukuin si Waway”in 1984 and Victor Corpuz in 1988.
The last film he made was “Hula Mo Huli Ko” with Rufa Mae Quinto in 2002. He then veered to television roles as he appeared in GMA-7 series Twin Hearts and Atlantika.
In 2001, Daboy tried to enter politics as he ran for Quezon City under former President Joseph Estrada but lost to Sonny Belmonte Jr.
Rudy is survived by his wife Lorna Tolentino and three sons Renz, Ralph and Mark Anthony Fernandez. Mark Anthony is his son with former partner Alma Moreno. (JRDB/Sunnex) |
