ZAMBOANGA CITY -- A ranking leader of the al-Qaeda linked Abu Sayyaf bandits with a P500,000 bounty was arrested in Lamitan City, Basilan, police reported Monday.

Combined police and military operatives under Army's 9th Intelligence Service Unit arrested Salim when they chanced upon him in Quezon Boulevard, said Macapantar.
Salim has nine warrants for murder cases and a P500,000 reward for his arrest.
He was one of those 130 suspects involved in the beheading of marine troops in 2006.
Fourteen marine troops were killed in a clash in the village of Guinanta in the town of Al-barka, Basilan last July 10, 2006. The Abu Sayyaf bandits reportedly beheaded 10 of the 14 troopers.
The government had filed criminal case against the Abu Sayyaf bandits and 130 people were identified as respondents of the case.
Macapantar said Salim is allegedly one of the mid-level leaders of the Basilan-based Abu Sayyaf bandits under Commander Puruji Indama.
Salim was placed under tactical interrogation and is being held at the 9th ISU headquarters, Macapantar said.
Basilan remains a stronghold of the Moro rebels, and government troops deployed anywhere in the province have been conducting operations to repel the bandits. (Sunnex)
