Lakas, Kampi merger starts in Mindanao
By Ben O. Tesiorna

DAVAO CITY -- The merger of the two administration political parties, Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) and Kampi, has started in Mindanao.

Being a Dabawenyo, Lakas president and House Speaker Prospero Nograles finds it fitting to start the merging in his hometown.

The first Declaration of Merger between Lakas and Kampi leaders in the provinces of Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, and Compostela Valley was formally signed Wednesday afternoon in a ceremony attended by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Nograles said the "historic process" of effecting the merger between two political parties in the Davao Region will be replicated in all other areas of the country.

"We are starting the process in the provinces in keeping with our principle of subsidiarity and the bottoms-up approach, and to emphasize our adherence and respect to the fundamental tenets of democratic participatory governance," Nograles said.

He added: "With the merger, the administration party will now be able to pool their energies and focus their efforts for the establishment of a strong and growing economy and help guarantee peace and order and stability in the country."

The Speaker hopes to end their regional sojourn by October in preparation for the 2010 elections. By then they will be able to visit 81 provinces and 136 cities and merge all Kampi and Lakas officers therein.

The merging will also be brought down to the 1,495 municipalities all over the Philippines.

"This means that the new administration party, by January 2009, shall truly become the political colossus that we have earlier envisioned it to be," Nograles said.

However, he added that it is not only 2010 that they are aiming for but more importantly in bringing about of meaningful solutions to the problems of the country.

Attending the merger event were Nograles, Lakas president, and Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno, President Arroyo's co-chair in Kampi.

Puno, for his part, said: "There will be no repeat of the administration senatorial candidates' defeat in 2010. It will be a 12-0 in the senatorial slate in favor of Lakas-Kampi." (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
