12 killed as typhoon Fengshen sweeps through central RP (2:45 p.m.)

MANILA -- Officials say flash floods and landslides have killed at least 12 people after typhoon Fengshen slammed into the country's south.

Provincial administrator Norie Unas says 10 people have drowned after a swollen river overflowed its banks and swept away three houses early Saturday in South Upi township in southern Maguindanao province. Five others are missing.

Unas says the area sustained widespread damage from the typhoon.

Mayor Muslimin Sema says a 50-year-old man and his 10-year-old grandson have been killed when a landslide buried their home on a hillside shanty community in nearby Cotabato city.

The National Disaster Coordinating Council reports flooding and power outages caused by toppled power pylons in many areas in the central Philippines. (AP)
