Helicopter crash kills Guatemalan interior minister (10:10 a.m.)

GUATEMALA CITY -- A government official says Guatemala's interior minister has been killed in a helicopter crash.

Presidential spokesman Ronaldo Robles told The Associated Press the helicopter crashed Friday in a wooded area in northern Guatemala.

He says Interior Minister Vinicio Gomez and Vice Interior Minister Edgar Hernandez were killed.

Army spokesman Jorge Ortega says the helicopter lost radar and radio contact over the Alta Verapaz area. Fog and heavy rain were reported.

President Alvaro Colom is in Mexico for a regional summit. A spokesman traveling with the president did not know whether Colom would return immediately to Guatemala. (AP)
