Arroyo is happy with Pacquiao's victory (4:03 p.m.)

MANILA -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo led the Filipinos around the globe in cheering for new WBO lightweight champion Manny Pacquiao, who won against American boxer David Diaz via knockout on the ninth round Sunday.

“Manny once again showed the sterling quality of excellence of a Filipino at his best. We rejoice with the whole nation in his victory...What a masterpiece,” Arroyo said, as quoted by Press Secretary Jesus Dureza.

Dureza said the President watched Pacquiao's fight on television while waiting for her flight to Manila from San Francicso.

Arroyo just came from Washington for a meeting with Republican presidential bet John McCain.

Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Sergio Apostol said Pacquiao is expected to make a courtesy call to President Arroyo in his return to Manila.

Apostol said Arroyo is “very, very happy with Pacquiao's victory.” (AH/Sunnex)
