Interpol experts to help identify Princess victims (1:35 p.m.)

CEBU CITY -- Six forensic teams from the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) will arrive in Cebu City within the week to help and train local experts in the DNA testing of victims of mv Princess of the Stars.

Interpol Secretary General Ronald K. Noble said they would be conducting DNA test, as this would be the most reliable test in identifying the cadavers considering its present condition.

Noble said 3,000 DNA kits will arrive within the week from Europe. A help desk will also be set up at the Cebu City action center starting Wednesday to answer concerns of family members of ferry victims.

Noble told family members in a briefing at the action center that foreign experts will help identify the bodies as soon as possible and free of charge.

Bloodstain samples will be taken from all family members of the ferry victims whether the bodies are recovered or not. The profile will be used later once more bodies will be recovered.

"The Interpol is so sorry of the lives lost in the tragedy," Noble said.

DNA samples from family members and from the recovered cadavers will be sent to Europe for processing and cross matching.

Noble said the process would take about two weeks to finish. He added that results of the tests will be forwarded to the families of the ferry victims. (Sunnex)
