NPA's propaganda unit allegedly entered Davao City
DAVAO CITY -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Sunday said it received reports that the Sandatahang Yunit Pampropaganda (SYP) of the New People's Army (NPA) has already infiltrated the inner settlements of Davao City, particularly in the Agdao area.
"There are indications and unconfirmed reports that they are in the area," Major Armand Rico, Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) public information officer, said in a text message Sunday.

On the other hand, the police are verifying the reported presence of SYPs and the Special Partisan Units (Sparu) of the rebel group. The Sparus are known for implementing assassination plots against people perceived to have committed crimes against the revolutionary movement.
"Intelligence reports show that they are at the doorsteps of the city," Chief Superintendent Andres Caro II, police regional director, said.
Alsa Masa
Caro said even if there are reports of the reorganization of the Alsa Masa, which used to go against the rebel group in the past, police have yet to receive concrete reports.
"The Alsa Masa is not under the PNP or the AFP; the people got fed up with the atrocities of the rebel group, that is why they created the Alsa Masa," Caro said.
It was in the mid-1980's, at the height of guerilla warfare in Davao City, when some men folk in downtown Davao decided to mass up and form the anti revolutionary movement dubbed as the Alsa Masa (Mass Uprising). The main objective of the group was to counter the atrocities committed by the rebel group in the city.
Atrocities
As of Friday, the police have already recorded 97 atrocities committed by the rebel group in Southern Mindanao alone. The atrocities of the rebel group ranged from ambushes on military and police troops and installations, hostage taking of civilians and government troops, extortion activities, killings of personalities associated with government troops, and even attacks on private businesses that have refused to pay revolutionary taxes.
Also, intelligence reports obtained over the weekend showed that the rebel group has targeted some of the biggest companies in Southern Mindanao, as stated in its "hot list."
The companies involved range from water distributing facility, Davao City Water District (DCWD), banana companies of Lapanday Foods Corporation, Dole-Stanfilco, as well as Franklin Baker. (Carlo P. Mallo/Sunnex)
