CBCP's appeal for deregulation, e-VAT laws acknowledged (10:25 a.m.)

MANILA -- Malacaņang's economic team is taking note of the Catholic Bishop's Conference of the Philippines' (CBCP) proposal to revisit the oil deregulation and expanded value added tax (e-VAT) laws.

However, the Palace is leaving it to Congress to decide whether amendments are necessary.

"I'm sure Congress will give due attention to the CBCP call to review oil and e-VAT legislation," Secretary to the Cabinet Ricardo Saludo said.

Deputy spokesman Anthony Golez, on the other hand, said the Congress was the one that passed the law, thus any amendments would have to go through it.

"Laws are made by Congress and the only way to change the laws is if Congress will change it. But the Palace is constantly reviewing it, especially the e-VAT law," Golez said.

Golez, however, reiterated that the administration sees more disadvantages in the scrapping of the e-VAT. (JMR/Sunnex)
