Neri is new SSS chief
MANILA -- Social Security System (SSS) administrator Corazon dela Paz officially resigned from her post Wednesday after Malacañang announced she is being replaced by acting Commission on Higher Education chairman Romulo Neri.
Dela Paz, in a radio interview, admitted that she tendered her resignation as early as June due to health reasons and her desire to return to the private sector.

She said she was planning to stay until July 31, but there were reports that her resignation maybe approved as early as July 15.
She also hinted that politics may have played a role in her decision to end her seven-year stint as administrator of the SSS.
Press Secretary Jesus Dureza said Neri would replace dela Paz.
Dureza said Neri, who would have a Cabinet rank pursuant to Administrative Order (AO) 232 which created the unified social welfare reform program, would only assume his new post on August 1.
"She (dela Paz) earlier sent a letter of resignation to the President (Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo) expressing her desire to return to the private sector. The President accepted her resignation and cited her for her leadership, the reforms and initiatives she did as SSS chief," said Dureza.
He said Neri, as SSS administrator, would head the newly launched national social welfare program of the government.
Reports said Ched commissioner Nona Ricafort is being eyed as Neri's replacement at the higher education commission.
Neri, prior to his appointment to the SSS, was the acting chairman of Ched since July 2007.
He was the director general of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) from February to July 2007, the same post he held from 2002 to 2005 before being reassigned by Arroyo to head the Department of Budget and Management from 2005 to 2006.
Neri, who was considered a key witness in the controversial national broadband network (NBN)-ZTE deal between the Philippines and China, was the director general of the Congressional Planning and Budget Office of the House of Representatives from 1990 to 2002.
He also served as associate professor of the Asian Institute of Management-Eugenio Lopez Foundation from 1986-1990, and was the corporate planning manager of the Canlubang Sugar Estate/Canlubang Pulp and Manufacturing Corporation from 1980 to 1985.
He was also the assistant finance manager of the Philippine National Oil Company from 1979 to 1980 and the planning coordinator of the same company 1976 to 1977. He likewise served as planning coordinator of the Luzon Stevedoring Corporation from 1975 to 1976 and financial analyst of the Mobil Oil Philippines, Inc. from 1973 to 1975.
Neri served as assistant to the president of the Riverside Mills Corporation from 1971 to 1973 after serving as instructor at the College of Business Administration of the University of the Philippines from 1970 to 1971. (JMR/Sunnex)
